Business Broadband & Data Services

Broadband locally managed and supported.

What business broadband services do we offer?

We provide a comprehensive range of broadband services at competitive prices. What makes us different is as a local and independent service provider we can offer local backup and support, no AI bots or ticketing systems, so you can speak to a real person when you need to*.

*Normal working & support hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm excluding public bank holidays

FTTC
(Fibre to the Cabinet)

This is broadband delivered over a traditional PSTN line (and telephone number) and will be affected by the BT PSTN switch-off.

It is recommended that FTTC broadband is migrated to SoGEA.

SoGEA
(Single Order Generic Ethernet Access)

This service is a direct replacement for FTTC and will not be affected by the BT PSTN switch-off. There is no telephone line or number with this service.

FTTP
(Fibre to the Premises/Full Fibre)

This is a full-fibre connection into the building with higher speeds than FTTC or SoGEA and should be a more robust connection.

Lease Line

This is a private data (broadband) service, more expensive than the other services but has service delivery guarantees.

Our customer base is varied, from independent sole traders to larger corporate businesses across most business sectors. One thing they all have in common they value the reliable local hands on service we offer. Local personal support, and real people to assist; no AI bots, ticketing systems or call centres.

That’s why we have an excellent record of customer retention with many being with us for over ten years for, most of which use our other services, VoIP telephone systems and mobile phones.

While we can’t always fix broadband issues directly, we’ll manage the fault, liaise with the provider and OpenReach, and even attend site (usually at no charge) if the issue is unclear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Makes Avalon Telecom Different?

We are a traditional telecoms company based in Somerset that has been trading since 1998 and has been providing and managing broadband services for over 10 years.

What makes our broadband and data services different from many of the other larger service providers is that we can locally manage the whole process from start to finish for new installations by installing and setting up the new router and continue to locally support you without you having to raise tickets online, use a chatbot or speak to a person in a call centre anywhere in the world when you have a fault.

We know how much businesses now rely on a robust broadband service and how frustrating it can be should the service fail. Although we cannot guarantee to fix any broadband faults in a certain time frame, we will manage the fault reporting directly with the service provider on your behalf and keep you informed of the progress. If there is some doubt when reporting the fault we will attend the site (normally free of charge) to confirm if the fault is with the equipment onsite, the network connection or with the service provider

Do I have to sign and commit to a long-term contract?

In a word no, not with us. Our contracts are typically 12 months then 30 days rolling. Our customers stay with us because we offer an excellent local service at a fair price and not because they legally have to, due to the legalities of a contract.

What are the expected speeds?

We would only be able to give an estimate of speeds on FTTC and SoGEA connections and this will depend on your postcode and available services. The highest would be up to 80 Mbps (Megabits Per Second) download and up to 20 Mbps upload speeds.

With Full Fibre (FTTP) connections speeds range from 80/20 (up to 80 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload) to 1000/115 (subject to availability). As with all broadband services these speeds are not guaranteed as it is a shared service.

With Lease Lines speeds are better guaranteed than broadband as it is your private internet connection and is not shared, a typical example would be a 100/100 connection that should provide very close to 100 Mbps download and 100 Mbps upload continuously.

How do I know what is available?

You can research online, or if you are a business user (in our area) then why not contact us and we will investigate and advise you on your options.

Do I get a line and telephone number with SoGEA?

In a word, no. SoGEA is a broadband-only service delivered by a copper pair of wires from the local ‘green cabinet’ not the BT exchange. SoGEA is therefore not affected by the BT PSTN Switch Off.

Do I lose the line and telephone number when migrating from FTTC to SoGEA?

Yes, you do. SoGEA is a broadband-only service delivered by a copper pair of wires from the local ‘green cabinet’ not the BT exchange.

Beware before migrating that the analogue line is not used for other services like card payment machines, alarm system monitoring or even fax!

Do you do ‘cheap broadband’?

In short, no, but we do offer great value broadband with excellent local service. If you have a fault, you’ll speak to a real person—no ticketing systems, chatbots, or call centres.

While we can't guarantee a specific timeframe for fixing broadband issues, we will handle fault reporting directly with the service provider and keep you updated. If there’s any uncertainty about the fault, we’ll visit your site (usually free of charge) to determine if the issue lies with your equipment, the network, or the service provider.
